Million Orchid Project

Saturday, June 24, 2023

On Saturday, June 24, 2023 more than 40 orchid-loving volunteers turned up at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club to participate in a special Million Orchid Program event, planting more than 140 native orchids in the trees on this historic property.

Organized by Centennial Chairman, Robin Burr, the Woman’s Club is celebrating their 100 years of community service by hosting numerous public events in 2023, culminating in their big gala celebration on December 2, 2023.

The focus of the Million Orchid Project (MOP) has been to reintroduce species of native orchids in large scale on the urban landscapes of the local community. These species of orchids grew wild in the native trees here more than a century ago.

Dr. Jason Dowling, Director of the MOP, brought with him the orchids to be installed in the landscape based on his prior visit and assessment back in February. He gave the gathered volunteers thorough instructions on how to install the orchids before the various teams began placing them in the trees. Due to the wonderful instructions, and with so many volunteers, the orchids were prominently secured and on display in record time. With the rainy season upon us, the club won’t have to worry about irrigation while the orchids become acclimated to their new setting.
